Can't login to local clone of live site

To serve the need for a Dev version of a live site for further development, a full copy of the live site's Drupal installation was downloaded and a current database copy made with Backup & Migrate. The local site created with Dev Desktop appears to run OK, but I can't log into it using the same credentials used for the live site. Why wouldn't this local clone carry over the same user and login info? What modifications do I need to make to get the login working? Thanks....

I commented out the cookie domain in settings.php and was able to login successfully.
#$cookie_domain = '.productiondomain.edu';
Make sure to also change the base url because at first the login redirected me to the production site. Whew! I almost made a HUGE mistake before I realized this!
$base_url = 'http://localsite.local:8083'; // NO trailing slash!

I have the same problem in Mac OS X 10.9. I commented out the cookie domain in settings.php and was not able to login. Then I changed the base url from "http://localsite.local:8082" to "http://localsite.dd:8082" and the problem persists: It is imposible for me to loggin to my local site after I update to new version of Acquia Dev Desktop. This is my actual version:

Acquia Dev Desktop
Version: 2 RC
Built: Dec 18 2014 06:56:23
Control panel rev: 57789
Stack rev: 55849

Can Anyone helpme please?

Just want to add that I'm having the same issue. Upgraded to the newest version of Acquia Dev Desktop (following the prompt upon startup to upgrade) and now I can't login to my local sites, the page just refreshed, no error message. Changes suggested above have also not helped me.

Mac OSX 10.10
Acquia Dev Desktop
Version: 2 RC
Built: Dec 18 2014 06:56:23
Control panel rev: 57789
Stack rev: 55849

Will keep troubleshooting for now.

If it's any help, I think the problem must be related to authorizations because I could see that in all links shown the error "Access Denied".

Having the same error, when I updated I was already logged in so I noticed that I couldn't save any forms first. So I uninstalled, installed again, and re-cloned my dev site and now I cannot login either.

Build fixed it for me also. Seems the last one was missing the "Allow" connections permission popup.

This is now fixed in the latest build - Using Dev Desktop 2 select Check for updates (which Dev Desktop 2 also does on every restart) or download it from acquia.com/downloads. As usual if you run into problems please report the issue as described in https://docs.acquia.com/dev-desktop2/troubleshooting
