settings.php in git overwritten by local install

Greetings

Eachtime I try to install my site locally I pull down the code with git clone and the settings.php is included in the repository. So after installing my site locally the site in the acquia cloud breaks.

I have tried to ignore the settigns.php in .gitignore and "git rm --cached settings.php" but this deletes the file and breaks the cloud too.

So how should I install my drupal site on my local server with out breaking the cloud?

I've got the same question. We have multiple developers working on the site locally. Ignoring settings.php deletes it from the repo and cloud site. Can someone clarify the best practice for how settings.php should be setup so it works on the cloud sites and for local developers?

Thanks for any help. I can't quite figure this one out.

You can use git update-index --assume-unchanged settings.php
